Stuff What Don’t Count

Tonight was the second time I have pulled out my voting signs to find that one had reset itself. I took these two screen shots:

Note that one sign has 7 total votes and the other 33. Both signs when I put them out the day before were around 27 or so total votes, and during the day one or both were voted on, but somehow one got reset to zero either by itself, or someone has somehow learned an exploit that allows them to reset another person’s voting sign. It also happened to this one:

I sent in a bug report on it. I keep pretty close tabs on total votes just for funzies, but since the signs are not working properly count this on an ever growing and never ending list of crap in There that does not work right, and therefore spoils the fun and use of said thing.

Real Life?

 

As I continue onward it becomes clear that there are days when I will have to talk about …*gasp* REAL LIFE here and so I guess today is as good a day as any to insert a new header that denotes when I may be talking about that life that is outside of games, virtual worlds and such.

I did go into There yesterday for a short while, but it is so very dead right now. I am not sure where everyone is, or what they are waiting for, perhaps there are many that either have not been able to get in or they are not coming back. Maybe they are beginning to feel as I do, that it will be a short lived and happy reunion, but the longevity factor is just not happening.

 

I played a little City of Heroes, it is Winter Festival Special Event time in there, and I must go get my goodies and my badges for the year. I will probably play a bit today. Perhaps I will begin to share some screen shots here of COH as well.

I may go into Guild Wars too, I have not been in some time, and apparently Guild Wars 2 actually has a April release date now. Yesterday the official website announced the Eighth profession. The Mesmer. Not like we were surprised. The home page is pretty funny . It begins with a cute animation of a Bard. And we all know that Bards Suck!  I am sure that many who went to page to see the Eighth profession and saw “The Minstrel” said to themselves…NO!!! I do love ArenaNet’s sense of humor.

 

John comes home tomorrow and I am so happy. We have been on a forced vacation from one another because of gas prices and him trying to do some catching up on some of his bills, so it will be the first time we have been together in over a month. Of course this also means I have not seen the dog, and this time he is leaving him with me while he goes to Arizona to be with his grandkids for Christmas. I do miss having the dog and have to keep reminding myself that his health depends on being caged during the day, something that I could never do to him. This weekend is the Christmas cocktail party at my sister Denise’s house. Mmmmm Bloody Marys. (Seems oddly sacrilegious, but they are yummy)

 

Money for Nothing and Your Kicks for Free

 

So, they tried out subscriptions yesterday (I happened to be online and apparently Bob3000 was the first subscriber. (It was sent out in a global message). Personally? I have already chucked 30 bucks into the hat. No clue now if I am a Sneetch or not—-

I know that MW apparently dislikes the Sneetches. I know I took advantage of this offer:

 

Way back in the day….Was this v1 Beta Lifetime? Who knows? Maybe I will keep a running total this time. I do remember by the end of Beta I had already spent something like 500 dollars. I am not a developer, have no talent other than the gift of gab and a love or writing, so it was all cold hard cash. I know quite a few people who took more out than they ever put INTO it. Yea, it was FREE FREE FREE….as MW is so very fond of saying.

 

I went in last night and today and added some time to a couple PAZ. YEA SPENT THOSE BOUGHT AND PAID FOR THEREBUCKS on time for the various PAZ I own and like to keep in my pocket. Kind of got Angela’s house together, and got the one I just call “The Shack” built, and my “Boudoir” all from memory! Got a bit frustrated and screamed out for all to not hear my chagrin and vexation!

One pet peeve currently is that I try to TP someplace, it says it is “full” and I finally manage to FLY there in my hoverboat, only to find it completely void of life. Wonder what it is full of?

I pity the people who are currently paying for zones no one can get to.

Slackers R Us

I began a good rant post on Monday (my designated day to rant), but then got sidetracked as I often do, on other things and then another day passed and Well here we are at Wednesday morning and I am finally getting around to posting!

Finally in the snail mail my Paypal “address verification” code came yesterday. Of course then I could not find where you put said code IN, so I ended up having to call Paypal, and they put it in for me. I told them that they really needed to simplify that process. (Not like anyone listens to me) They confirmed as well that I am one of their first customers, having had a paypal account since 1998.

Never could get relapse‘s toon revived, and I am not sure if he will revive it at this point. Ten bucks a month is a lot to pay for old tech that is not being updated or modified except by members who are treated like crap for the most part. He never did have a great love for There, because there was entirely too much Drama, and several people to be honest did some really shady things to him when he was there, and that was why he left. His real life is more than wonderful, and he does not need the complication of a virtual world where people are assholes.

Anyway, so I purchased some Therebucks, paid Sum_Wun back for the loan to rent the clubhouse, put a little bit of time on a couple PAZ to build them, but did not put much because (another mini rant) Everything…and I mean EVERYTHING is way too expensive in There, especially Clubhouse rents and PAZ time. I find it funny that MW would put the famous 15 buck lemonade cartoon on his blog, and not learn the lesson of it.  There should have, at least 3 years ago, lowered the price of  PAZ  time, and Clubhouses are still the most expensive thing in There. I have paid the same 18k a month for 7 years running. It is no wonder most of them stood empty when There closed.

Here is the rundown:

10 bucks a month subscription

10 bucks a month for the clubhouse

10 bucks a month PAZ time (if you keep even a “cheap” PAZ out in world at any time)

10 bucks a month for “extras”

That is a minimum 40 bucks a month for an application that is almost a decade old, and this, while other “games” are going Free To Play.

Yet another HUB decision. I honestly wish MW would sell it to someone who could CHANGE their mode of thinking and make some decisions based on good customer service and relations, if not, in all honesty I see There as a failed company again, run by the same failed Simon Lagree-esque mentality.

Peer Review, Now with Jello!

So yesterday Samsyn (Dan Samuel) made a clarifying post on MW’s blog about the “Peer Review” process for developers which stated this (set in Jello, according to MW):

In “Old There” when you submitted a design, you had to wait for one of our in-house approvers to look it over and approve it. In “New There” the plan is to use peer review instead (with a minimum of in-house oversight).

The details have NOT been worked out, but it will be SOMETHING like:

* you register somewhere as a ‘reviewer’
* you are then invited to review submissions as they come in
* you look them over per some nice set of rules
* you give a thumbs up or down
* your review is ‘recorded’
* when enough ‘review points’ have been obtained, the design is either accepted or rejected (‘automatically’)

And, of course, your full review history is maintained, so as you do a good job of reviewing, you gain some sort of status in the reviewer skill or something  (Likewise, if your reviews are generally way out of whack relative to other reviewers, you might lose status on the reviewer skill ladder)

With the idea being that a design could require a large number of thumbs ups from ‘newbie’ reviewers, but maybe only one or two from ‘veteran’ reviewers.

And probably some other rules like “you can’t review your own stuff”

But however it turns out, the goals are:

* keep costs down (so we can stay in business)
* prevent nasty/stolen stuff from making it into the world (and then needing to be removed after the fact, which is harder)
* actually get stuff in world *faster* (if we can sort of jump over sword, as it were)

And who knows, maybe it can be a cottage industry in itself…

To this end, it could turn out that “Previewer” became a multi-use tool, acting as:

* final product integration designer
* product submission client
* product review client

First, let me say that I have always loved the idea of a peer review system in There.com. In the past they have wasted so much time and money reviewing developer products. And this to me shows they are finally willing to release a bit of that white knuckled control to their user base and trust them to do the right thing.

Also I think I would make a great reviewer, since the number one thing I love to do in world is check out what people are making. It is because my nephew is relapse. I have watched him grow up learning how to do 3d art, and then making a business of it: Digital DK. I love to see developers hone their skills in world, and love to see what they come up with that is unique and creative.

 

Tiki Travels

Yesterday MW made a “short and sweet” power point blog post which seems to bring us a step closer to a fully functioning and open world. I am not sure when or where they “discussed” the “Pazoclypse”, too bad MW has not mastered the art of tracking back to his own blog, and we could all save ourselves time and much searching.  For me and mine, my own opinion, is that although he is trying to be “fair” by pulling up PAZ based on some sort of randomness so that everyone is affected, it is that same form of violent sheep decision making, where the group is punished for the acts of the few mentality. (Must be something in the water out there on the coast). Personally, if it were me, I would just pull the areas of the worst “offence”–the offence being drag on the servers, and pull them once a week. Less work for Samsyn and the actual PAZ that are causing issues would be the ones targeted.

There still seems to be a lot of contempt for his users in MW’s blog. I always feel like a kid in the back seat of the car while my siblings are screaming “Are we there yet?” and I am the one that feels the surprising sting of the backhand from Dad.  I often wonder if MW has any love for There.com left, or if  its is now just something he is the reluctant owner of, like a box full of childhood junk you move from house to house–a lot of sentimental value but not much else, and bulky and hard to move, at that.

That having been said, What the heck is the bold and all caps  misspelled word at the end of the post: “IMPORANT” ? Did he mean to go on and scold his back seat children some more and just ditched it? ‘lol  I would ask, but I don’t reply to his blog anymore (at least not directly, I reply in my own fashion here, not like he reads it)  since I had the herd of sheep trample me last August.

So Yea, yea Tiki Travels! On to things that do not make me mutter and groan. I was out in world as usual, puttering about and there are some nice and REAL events going on in the “Happening Now” section. I am so glad to see it! Ok, ok, there was one not so nice event, (a “conversation”, go figger) By some chick who enjoys putting PAZ full of poo poo in Zephyr, but that was early in my travels and was a shrug and a go.

So I looked and found that adk1 had re-opened a Saja Speedway and hurried on over to check it out.

Was a nice, quick, practice track, and a couple other folks joined in: Namron and TinMan1968. Was great fun running a few laps with them and chatting and then adk1 came in as well and I got to talk to him a while about his zone.

Since all his saved tracks have gone poofies with the closing of  There.com last year, he is putting up a new track every day, so I for one, will be stopping by to check them out, and I highly recommend you put the Saja Raceway back on your Buggy circuit!  Who does not love a smooth track in the pink skies of Saja?

I then went out to the Bali Hai in Maidenflight and discovered that Escape has made it OPEN HOST! Oh I love people who own zones but make them Open Host! Especially the old and wonderful zones in landmark spots. Send a big THANK YOU to Escape if you see him in world for his generosity!

After that it was off for more buggy-like stuff and I checked out Bamboo Terrace 4×4 Track out on Ootay.

The zone is owned by GMan65 and is really laid out well for those who love the 4×4 buggy! Shows a real knowledge of the unique physics of the 4×4 in world. I ran it a couple times with one of the unlocked buggies that were there. (Never understood the whole “locked buggy* left alone in a racing zone, but that is me..)

After that I did some There History Book set outs since they were all coming back into my inventory. Was a fun day overall in There.

Random Bits and Pieces

Just some random thoughts this morning as I sort out some things on this blog and some other places.

I have added back my top menus on this blog, although those may change. Michael Wilson sorted out his little “Facebook Ban”, and does have a Facebook Page now and it is THIS ONE.  There is another Michael Wilson on FB, apparently even an “imposter”. Maybe the “THE” will help? Maybe if the REAL Michael Wilson took 5 minutes and put in a profile picture? Personally, his issues with his Facebook page are indicative of the management of There in general, and the Drama of virtual worlds that I try to avoid, so I will just leave it lie. He has indicated he may start a different “place for us to all communicate”. Once again, There Management  ignores what the users have done to take control in their tight little fists. Why not just recognize people who have worked hard to keep his little ducks in a row, and allow Thumdar and the Thereian Community Facebook Page to do that FOR THEM? ‘whatever. I could rant a while on this subject but I will save it for a Head Up Your Butt Council rant.

I have put the blog roll back in at the bottom and that will change a lot too as I find and add other people who are still doing their mostly un-recognized and un-appreciated contributions to the phoenix rising.

I have begun some work with Francis_7 to revamp and beautify his spectacular Timeline, and to include some of my There History stuff with it. I hope to begin at some time doing some interviews with people for Historical clarification.

I have a long and getting longer list of rants and bugs and such, but am trying to stay mostly positive on the blog for now, but it is coming….oh yes…it is….

Buggy Trails, To You…

Yesterday was a pretty busy day in and out of world, and so I did not get a chance to post much. In world, I ran around and did some buggy practice at a couple places. My new “favorite” place for buggy practice has got to be Mosquito Mesa or “Dog Valley” in Cangrejo run by Styki .

Everyday that I have gone by a different track has been up, even one with a Christmas Theme. Most of the tracks are just really good practice tracks without too many buttons and bells. Really reminds me of the great tracks out at Grass Valley Raceway back in the old days when the Buggy was king of There.

Another track that is fun to go to is the Sonblock Raceway out on Frosty Island run by WizardK. The tracks I have run out there so far have been well built and fun to run.

Mr_Fignewton came into world for a while last night but I neglected to get a screen shot. We hung out at the clubhouse and then ran around Caldera on a boat with Sum_Wun driving.  Lots of building and zone creation now that people are able to purchase Therebucks. A good sign. ‘tu

Just Rollin’ In It

Well last evening was the beginning! The Phoenix Crew got the Paypal button up and working and now everyone can buy Therebucks. I was quite excited and happy until I found out that There Inc. had also turned on the “Verified Address” protection feature of Paypal, which means your actual physical address must be verified (not merely your email address) before There will accept your Paypal payment. For those of us who live our lives frugally, (that would be me) and do not have credit cards to attach to our accounts, this is a longer process, but can still be done!  I have had an account on Paypal since 1998 and have happily (or so I thought) avoided the need to do this, until now. So it will be the end of the week or longer before I can sink any money into the Resurrection of There.  For those of you who are trying to use the “Alternate Method of Address Verification”, the instructions are not that concise or clear, and can be downright frustrating so I am going to post them here with my own “step by step” and see if I can either muddy the waters or make it clear as a bell for ya.

1. Log into your paypal account.

2. After log in, at the top of the page, upper right corner next to “help” click “Security and Protection”.

3. Click the yellow button center of next page that says “Explore Topics”

4. At the bottom of the next page under “All Security and Protection Topics” in the center click “Seller Protections” (very small letters)

5. On the next page on the Left are 3 tabs, click the one that says “Address Confirmation”

6. Press the hot link on that tab that says “Alternate Address Confirmation”

7. On the next page follow the instructions, and a snail mail letter will be sent to you to verify your address and will contain a code that you will then put into your paypal to be “Address Confirmed.”

The evening was not lost however, but saved by Sum_Wun who paid the Clubhouse rent for a month for us by transferring 18k Therebucks to me! I spent the rest of the evening joyfully decorating the Emporium so that it looks just like home again.

I am eternally grateful to Summy for saving the day for me! I can hardly wait til I can get the rest of my PAZ up and going.
